Instagram post 2191054970206519748_3259433669 I wrote my novel in 52 days.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⭐Disclaimer⭐ Everyone works at different speeds. That’s okay! Embrace what works for you 🤗
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
If you’re on my email list, you already got this info in an email this morning. (If you want to sign up, go to my website, #linkinbio!)
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I wrote my novel in 52 days: 15 days in September, 15 days in October, and 22 days in November. I’m hovering right around 100,000 words, which is where I wanted to be for this draft.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I met my goal. It wasn’t easy. There was a lot of frustration (and perhaps some swearing and tears) behind the scenes. Creating something from scratch, whether it’s a piece of visual art, a poem, an essay, a script, or a novel, is one of the hardest things we can do.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
But besides the frustration and swearing and occasional tears, there were many lessons learned. I've experienced intense growth as a writer over the last few months, and I’m positive this growth is going to make me an even better editor and writing coach.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
If you want to learn more about how I wrote my novel, visit the link in my bio. I’m sharing two blog posts today: one about my NaNoWriMo experience and one about my overall process for this novel. They’re long posts, so grab your drink of choice and settle in.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I'm off to chat with my in-person writing group and work on my revision plan for this novel, but I'd love to know your thoughts and your own experience! Drop a comment so we can chat ⤵️ °

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Next week, I'll be talking all about NaNoWriMo on the blog, including how I wrote my 100k draft in less than 90 days. (I'll also be announcing a new mini critique service for authors looking for a super budget-friendly editing option.) Stay tuned 🙌

Instagram post 2186628511756894082_3259433669 I’m a sucker for a good dinner party/ballroom scene in fantasy novels.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
#NanoOrNot19 Day 27: Favorite Scene
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
There’s a scene in my book where all four of my main characters are attending the monthly imperial dinner at the palace. It’s more than a dinner party; the friends are trying to figure out who knows about a secret they’re keeping.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
But it’s also about more than the pretty dresses (though we love a pretty dress in this house), the flowers, the glamour, or the mystery. It’s about Astrea starting to find her own power while also learning it’s okay to receive help from friends.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Tiny (unedited) excerpt below!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🌌🥂🏰🌌
A few weeks ago, Astrea would’ve wanted to run away, to abandon the mission. But tonight, she felt bold. If she wanted things to change, she had to take a stand.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
She smiled at Jin. “I guess you have to make me a promise, too.”
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
“And what would that be, Miss Hayasa?”
🌌🥂🏰🌌
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
What’s your favorite type of scene in fiction? What lessons do you find most powerful as a reader?

Instagram post 2185888623562433319_3259433669 There are many ways to tell a story.⁣
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⁣
#NanoOrNot19 Day 26: Writing Advice⁣
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⁣
I always struggle with giving writing advice. Not because I don’t know what to offer--that’s literally part of my job-- but because everyone’s needs are different based on where they are in their own writing journey.⁣
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⁣
But one of the universal truths I try to talk about is that we have to stop expecting perfection in the pursuit of being ‘real’ writers.⁣
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⁣
So often, I hear things like: 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭 𝘸𝘳𝘪𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘴 𝘥𝘰𝘯’𝘵 𝘥𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘭𝘦 𝘮𝘰𝘥𝘪𝘧𝘪𝘦𝘳𝘴; or 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭 𝘸𝘳𝘪𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘴 𝘥𝘰𝘯’𝘵 𝘶𝘴𝘦 𝘵𝘰𝘰 𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘺 𝘢𝘥𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘣𝘴; or 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭 𝘸𝘳𝘪𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘴 𝘨𝘦𝘵 𝘱𝘶𝘣𝘭𝘪𝘴𝘩𝘦𝘥 𝘣𝘺 𝘢 𝘣𝘪𝘨 𝘱𝘶𝘣𝘭𝘪𝘴𝘩𝘦𝘳 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘕𝘠𝘊; or 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭 𝘸𝘳𝘪𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘴 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘣𝘰𝘰𝘬𝘴 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘯𝘰 𝘮𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘬𝘦𝘴 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘮.⁣
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⁣
Not only do we put too much pressure on ourselves, but we receive additional pressure from social media, from craft books, from famous quotes by famous writers, and more.⁣
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⁣
So many of these soundbite-style pieces of writing advice don’t account for individual voices, for stylistic choices, for imaginative storytelling that subverts expectations. There’s no ‘perfect’ in art, and writing is art. ⁣
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⁣
Instead of worrying about what you ‘should’ be doing because someone on Instagram or Stephen King said it, just write. Write, write, write, 𝘵𝘢𝘬𝘦 𝘢 𝘣𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘬, then write some more. The only way to understand your own style, voice, and story is to work through it.⁣
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⁣
It’s messy. It’s hard. And it’s really imperfect, but that’s the beauty of the process.⁣

Now that we’ve established my whereabouts…
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
#NanoOrNot19 Day 21: Word Count Check-In
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
All month I’ve been talking about how I’m not writing for all 30 days in November. Well, my trip is finally here!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
My goal was to be at 41,660 words today before leaving for the airport.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I got to 41,716 words! 💃
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I normally end these check-ins with the offer to help you with your project however I can. Since I’m traveling today, my responses may be a little spotty, but my DMs and email inbox are always open! I respond to every message; just be patient with me. 😊
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Happy writing! ✈️

Instagram post 2181535971466582078_3259433669 Who thought it was a good idea to let me talk about music? 🎶🎧
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
#NanoOrNot19 Day 20: Musical Inspiration
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It’s a good thing IG limits captions because I could write a 30-page paper with citations about this...
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In all seriousness, there are only two bands I think I’ve ever truly LOVED: the Foo Fighters and BTS. Diverse taste, I know. 😜 I like lots of music, but these two really speak to my soul. 🤗
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
BTS’s music has served as a huge inspiration for my current NaNo project. Their earlier music tackled generational and social issues while their more current music explores themes of self-love, dreaming big, and lost youth. If you really get into it, you can see where they draw inspiration from the field of psychology.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Hence why I could write a paper about this! It’s SO complex and deep. Even if the themes they explore evolve, they don’t shy away from tough subjects.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Their music videos are also great aesthetic inspiration, which is never a bad thing in my book!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
One of their songs from 2018, Magic Shop, was actually inspired by the book “Into the Magic Shop” by Dr. James R Doty (see a few posts back). It’s a fascinating book, and I can’t recommend it enough.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
They’ve also been inspired by “Demian” by Herman Hesse, “The One Who Walks Away from Omelas” by Ursala Le Guin, and “1Q84” by Haruki Murakami. 📚
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Music, stories, and the shared human experience really do transcend language.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
What music do you listen to while you write?

Instagram post 2180813812008172236_3259433669 Some of my earliest memories are of books, specifically The Magic Treehouse series, The Little House in the Prairie, and the Dear America/Royal Diaries books.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
#NanoOrNot19 Day 19: Books that inspire you 📚
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
There are so many absolutely amazing books in existence that it’s hard to choose just a few for an Instagram post.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I discovered both Jane Austen and Tamora Pierce in middle school. Two amazing women writers from two very different times writing two (obviously) different genres.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Recent favorites that have really stuck with me include Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo, Truthwitch (and the whole Witchlands series) by Susan Dennard, and A Darker Shade of Magic by V.E. Schwab. Three more amazing writers writing in the same genre but with very different styles.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I also loved Kite Runner by Khalid Hosseini, The Alchemist by Paolo Cohelo, and the Ember in the Ashes series by Sabaa Tahir. There are too many inspiring authors to name them all!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
And of course, I’d be remiss if I didn’t shout out to my clients. Their pursuit of their goals, their tireless efforts, and their dedication to writing inspires me every day. Editing is hard and meticulous work, but their stories and worlds always bring me joy.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I only own some paperbacks written by my clients, but visit btleditorial.com to see my (partial) portfolio!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Who is your favorite author? What books have inspired you lately? My TBR list is loooong, but I’m always looking to add to it. Besides, Santa’s been asking what I want for Christmas this year 😉🎄 If you have any recommendations, I’d love to hear them!

Instagram post 2179998490724308512_3259433669 To everyone who has helped me on my writing & editing journey… thank you.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
To Ms. Hanna, my elementary school teacher, I don’t know if I would have discovered my love for creative writing without you. Thank you.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
To my parents, thank you for always believing in my dreams and encouraging me to pick a career I was passionate about.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
To Dr. Bickley, my first editing professor who helped me discover my love of editing and pushed me to pursue that fledgling dream.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
To my dearest friends, Maddie, Nat, and Becca, thank you for everything over the last decade, for your love and encouragement through the years. I miss you all dearly and can’t wait to see you in 2020.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
To my fiance, you’re simply the best. Thank you for keeping me grounded, for making me laugh, and for always being on my team.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
To my writing friends, Samantha, Leah, and Kayla, who always know how to make me laugh, brainstorm new ideas, and help me to dream big in a scary industry.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
To my IG writing and #edibuddies, thanks for showing me that social media can be fun. Writing is hard, but it’s easier when you have a network of support.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
To Ryan and Lacey, we may talk more about video games than we do work, but thank you for always helping me when I need it. (And to Ryan for tanking ESO dungeons. That’s what big brothers are for, right?)
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
And finally, to my clients, thank you for trusting me with your manuscripts. Writing is hard, and working with an editor and sharing your work is a big leap into vulnerability. It’s hard, and I know that from experience. So, thank you for picking me as your partner in publishing. I promise to always do my best for you and support you as you chase your dreams. °

Instagram post 2179275230210496545_3259433669 What do you like to read?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
#NanoOrNot19 Day 17: Favorite Genres
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I’m breaking this down into three different parts today: what I like to read, what I like to write, and what I edit.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Fantasy and self-help/personal development books are my favorite to read. Recent reads include Brene Brown’s The Power of Vulnerability and King of Scars by Leigh Bardugo. I’ll be reading The Rise of Kyoshi and Daring Greatly (also by Brene Brown) before the year ends. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
When it comes to writing, I write a lot of nonfiction about writing itself (how meta) for my blog. My creative writing tends toward novel-length fantasy stories.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
And finally, editing! ✍️ I have the skills to edit just about anything, though when it comes to structural editing, I have more niche knowledge of the sci-fi, fantasy, and mystery genres. The bulk of my work is on fantasy manuscript--shocking, I know! I’ve also been editing lots of paranormal romance this year. 💜
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Do you write in the same genre you read?
